Small Caliber Dummy Ammunition, 5.56MM M199A1, 7.62MM M63A1, .50
Caliber M2A1 and 9MM M917A1
• Dummy ammunition is inert ammunition used for maintenance
operations and weapons familiarity training purposes.
• Physical description – The entire cartridge is silver in color with a fluted
cartridge case, no primer, and no fill, .50 Caliber Dummy Cartridges
have three holes in the cartridge case. (NOTE: 9MM has holes but is
not fluted)
• Prior to use, Dummy ammunition should be inspected for serviceability.
Serviceability Criteria:
o Nickel Plating Worn
o Cartridge Case Extractor Lip Chipped or Cracked
o Projectile Loose or out of Alignment with Cartridge Case
• Dummy rounds will not be modified by remarking or painting. All
unserviceable dummy ammunition will be turned into the ammunition
supply point for replacement.
• Dummy ammunition will be stored in metal ammunition containers and
marked with the appropriate nomenclature. Warning: Dummy and
live rounds will not be mixed or stored in the same container.
• At all times dummy ammunition will be kept separate from live
ammunition when stored on Training Ranges.
• All personnel will be able to immediately identify a dummy or a live
round even if belted.
• Do not touch, pick up, or introduce found / foreign / unknown
ammunition into any training exercise. Contact area / range safety
personnel for disposition on any found / foreign / unknown items of
ammunition.
