Change:
1. Purpose. This advisory circular (AC) contains the specifications for airport light bases, transformer
housings, junction boxes, and accessories. This AC is not intended to be a compilation of currently
available product designs. This AC provides the basic standard requirements for critical dimensions and
performance requirements to which all manufacturers must demonstrate compliance.
2. Effective date. Effective January 23, 2013, only equipment qualified per this specification will be
listed in AC 150/5345-53, Airport Lighting Equipment Certification Program.
3. Cancellation. AC 150/5345-42F, Specification for Airport Light Bases, Transformer Housings,
Junction Boxes, and Accessories, dated October, 2006, is canceled.
4. Application. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends the guidance and
specifications in this Advisory Circular for airport light bases, transformer housings, junction boxes and
accessories. In general, use of this AC is not mandatory. However, use of this AC is mandatory for all
projects funded with federal grant monies through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and with
revenue from the Passenger Facility Charges (PFC) Program. See Grant Assistance No. 34, “Policies,
Standards, and Specifications,” and PFC Assurance No.9, “Standards and Specifications.” All lighting
designs contained in this standard are the only means acceptable to the Administrator to meet the lighting
requirements of Title 14 CFR Part 139, Certification of Airports, Section 139.311, Marking, Signs and
Lighting.
5. Principal changes. This revision of the AC contains the principle changes listed below. Change bars
in the margins designate all revised or new material.
a. Section 2, Applicable Documents: all download websites are updated. Document titles updated.
b. Paragraph 3.1.3.1 is updated to eliminate confusion about the proper light fixture fitting on light
bases with protective dams installed. A gap is necessary to allow light fixture mounting on the light base.
c. Paragraph 3.1.3.6 is updated to include a prohibition of exothermic welds on galvanized steel
light bases.
