Use/Relationship:
The maintenance manual combines the elements of a theory textbook manual (Type II)
and a maintenance/troubleshooting manual (Type III) into a single manual. It is generally
used in lieu of manual Types II and III for minor units of equipment where the complete
full maintenance coverage can be bound in a single manual and a separate limited
maintenance manual (Type I) is provided for limited maintenance.
This Data Item Description (DID) contains the format and content preparation
instructions for the data product generated by the specific and discrete task requirement as
delineated in the contract, and paragraphs 2, 3.2 and 4.2 of DS-56, Data Standard for the
Preparation of COMSEC Technical Manuals and DS-62, Data Standard for the Preparation
of Computer-Compatible Publication Text (entire document).
Requirements:
1. Reference Documents: The applicable issue of the documents cited herein, including
their approval date and dates of any applicable amendments, notices, and revisions,
shall be as stated herein. DS-56, Data Standard for the Preparation of COMSEC
Technical Manuals, current edition and DS-62, Data Standard for the Preparation of
Computer-Compatible Publication Text, current edition, are available at the National
Security Agency, 9800 Savage Rd, Fort Meade, Md 20755-6000; Attn: I5222.
2. Format: The Depot Maintenance Manual (Type II) shall be in accordance with the
format and style requirements of paragraph 2 of DS-56. Where text/tabular material for
the manual resides in a Government computer database, it shall be submitted in
accordance with DS-62.
3. Content: The textbook content shall be in accordance with paragraphs 3.2 and 4.2 of
DS-56.
