This directive states the mission, defines the command structure, and establishes the
responsibilities of the Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA) as an Air Force Field
Operating Agency (FOA). Refer recommended changes and questions about this publication to
the Office of Primary Responsibility (OPR) using the AF For 847, Recommendation for Changes
of Publication; route AF Forms 847 from field units through the appropriate functional chain of
command. Ensure that all records created as a result of processes prescribed in this publication
are maintained in accordance with Air Force Manual (AFMAN) 33-363, Management of
Records, and disposed of in accordance with Air Force Records Information Management

1. Mission. The Air Force Medical Support Agency (AFMSA), as documented by paragraph
2.3 of Headquarters Air Force (HAF) Mission Directive 1-48, The Air Force Surgeon General,
and this Air Force Mission Directive, directly supports the office of the Air Force Surgeon
General (AF/SG). AFMSA provides the expert staff and processes to ensure success of the Air
Force Medical Service. The AFMSA Commander asserts command authority over personnel
assigned to perform force management, health care operations, research and acquisitions, plans
and programming, and financial management.
2. Organizational and Command Structure.
2.1. The AFMSA is a field operating agency (FOA) reporting to the AF/SG.
2.2. The AFMSA Commander:
