SUMMARY OF CHANGES
This revision reflects Headquarters Air Force (HAF) reorganizations, changes to Departmental
and Service guidance, and reassignment of human capital development responsibilities to align
with AFI 36-2640, Executing Total Force Development.
1. Mission. The Deputy Chief of Staff (DCS) of the Air Force for Strategic Deterrence and
Nuclear Integration (AF/A10), pursuant to 10 United States Code (USC) §§ 9013-9023, §§ 9031-
9038, § 9040, Oversight of Nuclear Deterrence Mission, and as documented in Air Force
Mission Directive (AFMD) 1, Headquarters Air Force (HAF), and this HAF Mission Directive
(MD), assists the Secretary of the Air Force (SecAF), other Secretariat offices, and the Chief of
Staff of the Air Force (CSAF) in carrying out the monitoring, oversight, and assessment
activities regarding arms control international treaties and agreements, Countering Weapons of
Mass Destruction (CWMD), Department of Defense (DoD) Foreign Clearance Program (FCP),
and the safety, security, reliability, effectiveness, and credibility of the nuclear mission for the
Department of the Air Force (DAF). The SecAF retains ultimate responsibility for all policies
related to the DAF. Within his/her areas of responsibility, AF/A10 prepares policies for approval
and issues guidance/procedures, via official Air Force publications, to ensure implementation of
those policies. AF/A10 also assists the CSAF in his/her role as a member of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff, pursuant to 10 USC § 151, Joint Chiefs of Staff.
2. Organizational Relationships. The SecAF is responsible for, and has all legal authority
necessary to conduct, the affairs of the DAF. Secretariat, CSAF, and Air Staff offices perform
