SUBJECT: Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS)
References: See Enclosure 1
1. PURPOSE. This instruction reissues DoD Instruction (DoDI) 5105.45 (Reference (a)) in
accordance with the authority in DoD Directive (DoDD) 5124.02 (Reference (b)) to assign
responsibilities, prescribe procedures, and update the mission, organization and management,
and functions of the USUHS, pursuant to chapter 104 of Title 10, United States Code (Reference
(c)).
2. APPLICABILITY. This instruction applies to:
a. OSD, the Military Departments, the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
and the Joint Staff, the Combatant Commands, the Office of the Inspector General of the
Department of Defense, the Defense Agencies, the DoD Field Activities, and all other
organizational entities within the DoD (referred to collectively in this instruction as the “DoD
Components”).
b. The Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service, under agreement with the
Department of Health and Human Services, and the Commissioned Corps of the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, under agreement with the Department of Commerce.
3. MISSION. The mission of the USUHS is to train, educate, and prepare uniformed services
health professionals, officers, and leaders to directly support the Military Health System, the
National Security and National Defense Strategies of the United States, and the readiness of the
Military Services as well as the missions of the other uniformed services.
4. ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT. USUHS is an organizational entity reporting to
the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (ASD(HA)), pursuant to DoDD 5136.01
(Reference (d)) under the authority, direction, and control of the Under Secretary of Defense for
Personnel and Readiness (USD(P&R)) pursuant to Reference (b). The USUHS consists of:
