Subj: INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL PROGRAM FOR COAST GUARD
HEALTH CARE FACILITIES AND WORKERS

1. PURPOSE. This Instruction describes policies for preventing and controlling health care-
associated infections (HAIs) in patients, visitors, volunteers, and health care workers
(HCW) within any health care setting in the Coast Guard. This Instruction also provides
guidance and information on the prevention and control of diseases caused by infectious
diseases such as tuberculosis and bloodborne pathogens (BBP) in health care facilities.
2. ACTION. Area and district commanders, commanders of service centers and FORCECOM,
commanding officers of Headquarters units, Superintendent of the Academy, assistant
commandants for directorates, Chief Counsel, and special staff offices at Headquarters shall
ensure compliance with this Instruction's contents. Internet release is authorized.
3. DIRECTIVES AFFECTED. Coast Guard Medical Manual, COMDTINST M6000.1 (series)
Ch. 13 Section J, Infection Control Program (Exposure Control Plan) and Prevention of
Bloodborne Pathogen Transmission, COMDTINST M6220.8 (series) are cancelled.
4. DISCLAIMER. This guidance is not a substitute for applicable legal requirements, nor is it
itself a rule. It is intended to provide operational guidance for Coast Guard personnel and is
not intended to nor does it impose legally-binding requirements on any party outside the
Coast Guard.
5. ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT AND IMPACT CONSIDERATIONS.
a. The development of this Instruction and the general policies contained within it have
been thoroughly reviewed by the originating office in conjunction with the Office of
Environmental Management, and are categorically excluded (CE) under current USCG
CE # 33 from further environmental analysis, in accordance with Section 2.B.2. and
Figure 2-1 of the National Environmental Policy Act Implementing Procedures and
