QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO EARN THE MARINE SAFETY INSIGNIA
(a) Military Qualifications and Insignia, COMDTINST M1200.1 (series)
(b) Uniform Regulations, COMDTINST M1020.6 (series)
1. PURPOSE. This Instruction outlines the policies and procedures for earning the Marine Safety
Insignia.
2. ACTION. All Coast Guard unit commanders, commanding officers, officers-in-charge,
deputy/assistant commandants, and chiefs of headquarters staff elements will comply with the
provisions of this Instruction. Internet release is authorized.
3. DIRECTIVES AFFECTED. Reference (a) must be updated to include reference to this Instruction
as the qualifications required to earn the Marine Safety Insignia and remove the requirements needed
to earn the Marine Safety Insignia.
4. DISCUSSION. The Marine Safety field is a major contributor of Coast Guard service to the public,
and is well represented in the Coast Guard’s three roles of Maritime Safety, Maritime Security, and
Maritime Stewardship. This insignia recognizes members who have obtained the skills and
experience to be considered professionals within the Marine Safety field as they manage and execute
Coast Guard missions.
