MEMORANDUM FOR All Soldiers of the XYZ Unit, Town, State, Zip
SUBJECT: Unit Sponsorship Program SOP
1. The Unit Sponsorship Program is designed to properly welcome a new Soldier into the unit and the
Connecticut Army National Guard. The intent of the program is to demonstrate to the Soldier, that the
unit:
a) is concerned about their welfare
b) recognizes any anxieties and uncertainties
c) identifies conduct and performance expectations
d) provides guidance and information.
2. During the initial in-person meeting the Soldier will be in-processed by the unit Readiness NCO.
This meeting will normally take place the month following the Soldiers return from OSUT/AIT. The
assigned Platoon Sergeant/Section Chief is then notified of the newly assigned Soldier and a sponsor is
assigned. The sponsor will contact the new Soldier by telephone and designate a time and place to meet
at drill (the orderly room). Upon attending the first drill with the unit, the sponsor is given a
“Sponsorship Checklist” which contains the unit’s chain of command. The sponsor and newly assigned
Soldier will have the opportunity to meet and discuss topics ranging from; unit history, contract
commitment, drill attendance and the ordering of uniforms from supply. The Soldier will meet with their
Section Chief, Unit Clerk, 1SG, Supply SGT, Training NCO, URNCO, and the Unit Commander.
3. Upon completion of OSUT/AIT the new Soldier will receive their initial counseling session. During
the initial counseling session, the Soldier will discuss any issues or concerns with training, and if they
have any problems after they have returned. Counseling sessions continue at three months, nine months,
fifteen months, and twenty-one months.
4. The unit ensures personnel readiness by conducting ETS counseling at twelve months, nine months,
six months, three months, and the last month prior to a Soldier’s ETS date. These counseling sessions are
essential in identifying problems or trends that could affect the future readiness of the unit and inform the
unit as to the Soldiers’ intent to extend.
5. For additional details and Retention information, contact the undersigned or Unit Retention NCO.
