RANGE SOP
1. GENERAL. This SOP provides guidance for weapons qualification and familiarization for all
weapons that are authorized in the 138
th
Signal Battalion.
2. PURPOSE. To provide specific guidance on all phases of weapons qualification,
familiarization, setting up, operating and clearing ranges.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES.
a. Battalion.
(1) Provide initial guidance (weapons circulars).
(2) Forecast and request ranges.
(3) Draw range, or assist in drawing ranges as appropriate.
(4) Assist in clearing range.
(5) Provide ammunition and delivery to range.
b. Unit.
(1) Provide advance detail personnel to set up ranges as requested by Battalion.
(2) Provide material support for ranges as required and requested.
(3) Provide additional support personnel such as Range/Safety Officers, Line NCOs and
Ammo details as required.
(4) Insure that all personnel required to qualify with their assigned weapon, or assigned
additional duty weapons are at the assigned range on time.
(5) Insure that each soldier receives PMT (Preliminary Marksmanship Training) prior to
arriving on the range, and is aware of all safety rules and conduct for weapons firing.
(6) Provide all weapons, maintenance, transportation and equipment required for the
individual soldier.
c. Individual
(1) To be aware of all safety rules and operation of assigned weapon.
(2) Conduct his/her self in a military manner at all times during weapons qualification.
