Spring 2008 Cybercraft Workshop
Hosted by the Air Force Institute of Technology Center for Cyberspace Research
In collaboration with the Information
Directorate at the Air Force Research
Laboratory, the Center for Cyberspace
Research hosted the Fifth Cybercraft
Workshop from 15-16 April 2008.
Senior leadership, scientists, and
researchers with expertise in the cyber
area were invited to collaborate on
the Air Force Research Laboratory’s
Cybercraft initiative. A Cybercraft
is a trusted platform for Command,
Control, and Communication (C3) for
delivery of cyber defense capabilities.
Brigadier General (s) James Anthony
Buntyn, Vice Commander of the Air
Force Cyber Command (Provisional)
at Barksdale Air Force Base, was the
keynote speaker. He provided insights
into the standing up of the Air Force
Cyber Command and the challenges
warghters face in the new cyber do-
main. The mission of the Provisional
Command is to stand-up the follow-
on, permanent MAJCOM, while the
mission of the Major Command is to
provide combat ready forces trained
and equipped to conduct sustained
global operations in and through cy-
berspace that are fully integrated with
air and space operations. Although
the Air Force is heavily engaged in
cyber operations today, Brig Gen (s)
Buntyn maintains that dominance in
cyberspace requires new competen-
cies in cyber weapon systems fully
integrated with a cyber operations
career eld. To provide the operational
user perspective, a panel composed
of distinguished senior leadership and
scientists discussed their vision for
future network defensive solutions.
The members consisted of Dr. Steven
Rogers AFRL/RY, SES; Brig Gen (s)
Buntyn; Colonel Kevin Keck, AFRL/
XPC; Mr. Richard White, 67 NWW/
DIO; and Mr. Louis Giannelli, 83
NOS Det 3/SCN. The next Cybercraft
Workshop is tentatively scheduled for
28-30 October 2008 in Rome, New
York.
