GENERAL:
1. The position of First Sergeant is one of the most challenging, rewarding, and demanding positions in the Army. I
consider the position of an Alpha Company First Sergeant more challenging because of the multitude of unpredictable
events the First Sergeant and his or her team must manage on a daily basis. Those who lead well succeed in
strengthening the Army, Chemical Corps, and force structure by developing competent and confident leaders and Soldiers
– Soldiers who are qualified to perform their war time mission when called upon. I will not address the consequences or
impact of those who fail.
2. The Alpha Company First Sergeant is scheduled to leave o/a September 2006. This information paper prescribes the
process I will use for recommending Chemical Corps MSGs/SFCs for the position of HHC First Sergeant.
ELIGIBILITY: 74D MSG or Senior SFC w/wo M-identifier, with 18 months remaining in the division effective 1 September
06, and meets the basic criteria described in paragraph one.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
1. It is important that the next HHC First Sergeant possesses the background of a proven professional and a consistent
outstanding performer. Additionally, it is important that the First Sergeant be competent, confident and possesses the
temperament, leadership, management, and communications skills, required to make a good company better, in an ever
changing environment. Finally, a First Sergeant must understand the principles of training management and team
building. HHC is one of the few companies in the division that responds to the interest of the Division CSM
(simultaneously assisting the SGMs/officers of each separate staff, the Chief of Staff, and the Division Commander).
