M22/M88 AUTOMATIC CHEMICAL AGENT DECTOR ALARM (ACADA)

Isotope and Activity: Ni-63, 7.4E+08 Bq (20 mCi).
Basic Description: Radioactive material, excepted package - instruments or articles,
7, UN2911.
Chemical and/or Physical Form: Ni-63 Foil, solid, normal form.
Package Requirements:
Packaging: Excepted Packaging.
Package Label: Exempt.
Package Marking: Exempt. Container w/M22 must be marked in a visible location “Radioactive Material,
UN2911”. M88 Mounted in STRYKER- labels required when mounted in a vehicle so it is visible to the
driver.
Survey Requirements: Radiation Survey: Required prior to shipment.
- The radiation level at 10 cm (4 inches) from any point on the external surface of any unpackaged
instrument or article shall not exceed 0.1 mSv/hr (10 mrem/hr). The radiation level at any point on the
external surface of the package shall not exceed 0.005 mSv/hr (0.5 mrem/hr).
- Contamination Wipe Survey: No annual wipe test required for the M22 or M88 unless unit is damaged.
Wipes required prior to shipment only on reused containers, new containers do not require a wipe test. The
non-fixed radioactive contamination on the external surfaces of the package shall not exceed 22 dpm/cm2
(beta).
Transportation Requirements: Declared shipments are permitted aboard passenger-carrying aircraft, per
49 CFR 173.422. Forms to be used:
- Military Airlift – Army Radioactive Movement Form or Movement Memorandum
- Commercial Air – Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods (Red Border)
- M88 mounted inside the STRYKER is considered part of the system; Serial Number of the
M88 as well the vehicle contains a M88 must appear on the vehicle shipping documents.
Vehicle Placarding: Not required.
Additional Requirements: You shall certify this radioactive material for transportation by having a notice
enclosed in or on the package, included with the packing list, or otherwise forwarded with the package.
This notice must include the name of the consignor or consignee, Serial Number inventory and the
statement signed by a certified hazardous material transportation representative:

Additional Comments:
- M22 - Military Radiation Movement Form is required w/serial inventory inside the package
- There is a maximum of 3.0 E+13 Bq (810.8 Ci) total activity for Ni-63 that you may ship per package.
You may mail (USPS) up to 3.0 E+12 Bq (81.08 Ci) total activity of Ni-63 per package; all other 49 CFR
conditions applicable to excepted packages for radioactive instruments and articles apply.
- M22 - Equipment cannot be in the same Container as Explosive and/or Flammable material and must be
placed so that it is the first item removed from the container.
