For decades, China has pledged to absorb Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing
views as a renegade province. And for multiple times, Beijing has stated that it will pursue
unification through force if necessary. As a result, Taiwan's military has increased its
budget and stepped up training in preparation for such an invasion.
China's military has also been modernizing, with the addition of scores of fighter jets and
dozens of warships. However, if it invaded Taiwan, it would almost certainly meet a
circumstance in which advanced weapons would be ineffective: urban combat.
