Here is a list of Iranian satellite launch attempts and related flights. The Safir was similar to
the North Korean Paektusan and the first stage is thought to be based on the Hwasong-7 (Nodong).
The Simorgh is similar to the North Korean Unha. The Simorgh/Unha first stage is not derived
from a missile and was developed for space launch.
In the table, ”SO” indicates a probable suborbital test of the vehicle with only two of the
three stages used. Evidence of the 2012 failures consists of satellite imagery of pad activity and
pad damage, but is not decisive proof launches occurred. There is even less evidence for the 2014
attempt. However the overall evidence for planned launch activity in 2012-2014 coupled with the
absence of a successful launch does make it more likely than not that at least one failure did happen.
