This instruction implements AFPD 36-21, Utilization and Classification of Air Force Military
Personnel. It establishes command hiring requirements for squadron commander billets and
delineates tenure policy for all squadron commanders. This instruction additionally sets forth
requirements for managing wing chief of safety and director of operations billets. This
instruction applies to all active duty officers (below the rank of colonel) selected and approved
by an appropriate hiring authority. This publication does not apply to Air National Guard or Air
Force Reserve personnel. Ensure that all records created as a result of processes prescribed in
this publication are maintained in accordance with Air Force Manual (AFMAN) 33-363,
Management of Records, and disposed of in accordance with the Air Force Records Information
Management System (AFRIMS) Records Disposition Schedule (RDS). Refer recommended
changes and questions about this publication to the OPR using the AF Form 847,
Recommendation for Change of Publication; route AF Form 847s from the field through the
appropriate functional’s chain of command. This publication cannot be supplemented at any
level.
SUMMARY OF CHANGES
